Career Expectations for the GIS Professional: Consulting

This is the second in a series of three articles pertaining to what you can expect as a GIS Professional on a chosen career path. This part refers specifically to the world of consulting, one which can be defined in three ways. Firstly, if you seek job security, then do not consider a career in this field; secondly, if you wish to forever tackle high-angle professional challenges, then consulting is meant for you; thirdly, if you wish to do what GIS’ers like to refer to as “real GIS”, then be wary as there are many flavours of consulting. Bluesky Remote Sensing Data Improves Efficiency for WSP Smart Consulting

WSP, the global company providing management and consultancy services to the built and natural environment, is using a range of remotely sensed data from Bluesky to aid existing analysis and develop new techniques. Using the data, including laser mapped 3D models, UK National Tree Map data, near infrared imagery and aerial photography, WSP has improved the efficiencies of environmental surveys and reduced the need for site visits. The data has already been used for a number of projects, including an award nominated environmental assessment for a district heating feasibility project. “Application of the Bluesky LiDAR data within our analysis has... Pointfuse Point Cloud Software Transforms Design of Construction

Swanton Consulting has transformed the design of temporary works – such as façade and basement retention – using a software innovation that creates instant 3D models from laser scanner data. Processing of the millions of individual 3D laser scan measurements, known collectively as point clouds, used to take Swanton up to two weeks. However, since introducing Pointfuse V2 point cloud processing software, Swanton can now produce highly accurate vector models, suitable for immediate use by design engineers, in less than a day. Swanton Consulting specializes in the design of temporary works, deep basements, façade retentions, retaining walls, specialist structural elements... (read more)

GIS, Automation and your Future

Adena Schutzberg gives her view on whether people are still welcome in the world of GIS and can more be done in getting people where they are needed. I finished school at age 22 with two degrees and few skills. As one senior consultant put it when I was an intern at a consulting firm, I knew “how to read, write and think.” And, that was a good thing because it meant I could read hundreds of pages, pick out the key details, and compile them into a 20 slide presentation for a corporate client. Of significant importance to that... (read more)
