New Book: ‘GNSS Survey & Engineering’

Geomares Education introduces a new book, called ‘GNSS Survey & Engineering’, written by Huibert-Jan Lekkerkerk. 'GNSS Survey & Engineering' is aimed at providing the everyday professional GPS user with enough background information for the understanding and correct operation of satellite navigation equipment in general and particularly GPS. The new book is based on the lectures the author has written for the Skilltrade course in hydrographic surveying as well as a series of articles on satellite navigation systems. Today, GPS is almost synonymous with simple navigation and positioning in nearly all sectors. There are many brands and models to choose from... (read more)

Ordnance Survey to support Singapore

Ordnance Survey International (OSI) has been contracted to support project lead the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Government with its continued vision to be a Smart Technology world leader. The two-year project will address the automation challenge of converting IFC-BIM, which is building and construction industry data, into CityGML, an open standardised data model and exchange format that stores digital 3D models of cities and landscapes. The automated conversion to be developed in this project is expected to reduce costs in creating and updating semantically enriched 3D city models. The primary objective is the development of a methodology... (read more)

Ordnance Survey Announces OS Open Zoomstack

Ordnance Survey (OS) has launched OS Open Zoomstack, a mapping product under a three month trial. The Zoomstack API is an easier and more accessible way of using OS data in an interactive map and has been designed with start-ups and SMEs in mind to help with building mobile and web applications. The OS data within it can be transferred as a single 2GB data file, meaning it can be used off-line or out in the field. OS Cartographic Design Consultant Charley Glynn said: “Zoomstack is a vector-based map which ranges from a national overview right down to street level... (read more)

Survey on Pan-European Gazetteer Services

To explore interest in developing a pan-European gazetteer service, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC) and EuroGeographics, the member organisation for European National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies, have commissioned an open stakeholder survey. You can access the survey and distribute it to others via this link: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/EUGazetteerSurvey. Submission of answers is possible until 3 November 2017. Key ‘high value’ datasets, such as geographical names and addresses, have many uses both inside and outside the public sector. They form the backbone of European location services, which may include ‘gazetteer’ services, linking place names and addresses to point and... (read more)

Survey and GIS in San Diego

Everyone forms their own impressions of San Diego, but for surveyors and GIS folks in the Summer, it means the largest geospatial event in the world, the ESRI Survey & Engineering GIS Summit combined with the ESRI International User Conference. The 28th annual User Conference (UC) came in early August with the theme ‘Building New Opportunities’, the bulk of the Survey Summit running as prelude the previous weekend. The summit drew over four hundred attendees, a roughly 8% increase over last year. Both conferences featured a trade show. The summit also includes the Survey and Leadership Forum, actually, a Special... (read more)

Ordnance Survey Add Electricity Pylons to Map

At Ordnance Survey we often talk about the 10,000 changes a day being captured in our database containing all of the features of Great Britain. It can be hard to grasp how that much change is taking place – until you think about all of the new roads and buildings under construction and then burrow down into the level of detail we capture – right down to phone boxes and even electricity pylons. When National Grid announced that the first new electricity pylon design in 90 years was going to be erected in Nottinghamshire, we knew our surveying team would... (read more)

Ordnance Survey Becomes Flag Carrier for Open Data

National mapping agency Ordnance Survey (OS), once the arch opponent of the campaign for open data, is now positioning itself as its champion with OS OpenMap being released at the end of March. In an announcement to mark International Open Data Day, the organisation announced a new set of “street-level” data, OS OpenMap, which will be available for developers building new products. Restrictions on the re-use of so-called “derived data” - which is used in products sold by developers but originated with OS - have long been a focus of complaints from the geospatial technology industry. While the announcement does... (read more)

Bluesky Captures Ultra-high-resolution Aerial Survey of Dublin

Aerial mapping company Bluesky Ireland has captured the first-ever 12.5cm-resolution aerial photography coverage of the whole of the Greater Dublin area. Covering a total of 1,850 square kilometres, the imagery is so detailed that road markings, street furniture and property boundaries are all easily visible and is accurate for use in GIS and desktop mapping software. In another first for the Republic of Ireland, the data is also being made available through a dedicated web mapping service (WMS), allowing users to stream the imagery directly into their GIS or other compatible software. “This is a first for Ireland and is a...
