Earth Observation and UAVs - Imaging from the Sky

It was a pleasure getting this issue together – the theme Big Data sounds abstract and perhaps has first association with cloud computing, servers and other not-so-spatial aspects. We take a look in on Australia and their history of managing geospatial data and Singapore for an interesting case about a smart city – and the management of geospatial data that is hard to get as it involves areas that are not easily accessible from the street. Digging into the huge amount of geospatial data that nowadays involves city architectures, Niall Conway reflects on the new profile of a city planner.... (read more)

Esri Introduces Image Platform Bundles for Analysis and More

Esri has introduced four image platform bundles that enable management and analytics of all forms of imagery in a fraction of the time most desktop or enterprise image processing technologies require. The platform bundles allow organizations to save time on detailed and precise image analytics, making these tasks more cost-efficient than ever. The new Image Analysis, Image Management, Image Analytics, and Ortho Mapping bundles transform remotely sensed data—such as satellite, aerial, and drone imagery—into actionable information that organizations can use to make important operational decisions. For instance, the Chesapeake Conservancy used Esri's imagery capabilities to rapidly perform analytics on high-resolution... (read more)

Airbus Strengthens Imagery Capabilities with Vision-1

Airbus has enlarged its high-resolution imagery portfolio following an agreement to leverage capacity from the S1-4 satellite built by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL). This imagery from Vision-1 delivers full end-to-end imaging operations to Airbus’ customers. Vision-1 provides 0.9m resolution imagery in the panchromatic band and 3.5m in the multispectral bands (NIR, RGB), with a 20.8km swath width. These specifications are ideal for defence, security and agriculture applications, while the extra revisit opportunity further strengthens Airbus’ satellite fleet. “This new asset will reinforce our monitoring capabilities for sub-metre imaging and feed our OneAtlas digital platform to provide increased freshness,” said...
