OGC Announces Arctic Spatial Data Infrastructure Project

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) announces a new OGC Interoperability Program project called the "Arctic Spatial Data Infrastructure Standards and Communication Pilot" (Arctic SDI Pilot). The Arctic SDI Pilot is sponsored by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Natural Resources Canada. The goal is to demonstrate to Arctic stakeholders the diversity, richness and value of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) based on Web services and standardized exchange formats in helping address critical issues impacting the Arctic. Stakeholders include national and pan-Arctic science and monitoring organizations and decision-makers engaged in Arctic research, social and economic policy, and environmental management. The... Dubai and HERE Develop Data Infrastructure for Driverless Transportation

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai and HERE Technologies has announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding on a long-term technology collaboration with the aim of mapping the city with high definition technology. HD maps are a prerequisite to moving Dubai closer to its goal of having 25% of public transport self-driving services by 2030. Both parties plan to deploy newly available location technologies in the development of a data infrastructure to support safe, sustainable and efficient autonomous transportation. These efforts are in line with Dubai's Smart City strategy and its self-driving transport roadmap, which ultimately... (read more)

EarthSense Model Impact of Green Infrastructure on City Traffic Pollution

Scientists from EarthSense Systems and the University of Leicester have published the results of a study into the effect of urban trees on air pollution. The results show a direct link between air pollution and green infrastructure, with trees and grass cover contributing to a reduction in concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The newly published research shows that the aerodynamic dispersive effect of trees results in a 9.0 percent reduction in PM2.5 concentrations. A decrease of PM2.5, by 2.8 percent owing to deposition on trees and 0.6 percent owing to deposition on grass, was also observed. Conducted on a... (read more)

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Supports Zurich’s Public Transportation Network

Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) has selected Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s public transport GIS solution to improve infrastructure data quality and access in Switzerland’s largest city. Hexagon’s Geographic Transportation Asset Management System (GeoTrAMS) will provide VBZ with a central database, standard workflow-driven applications and organisation-wide access to geospatial information and capabilities. VBZ’s 2,500 employees operate 76 tram and bus lines on a 510-kilometre network. Currently, data for rail, switches, stops and overhead traction wire is available in computer-aided design (CAD) format, and their evaluation is a time-consuming process. VBZ rail vehicles travel 90,000 kilometres and serve more than 900,000 passengers each... (read more)

Trimble Incorporates Galileo Support in its GNSS Infrastructure Management Software

Trimble has introduced version 3.10 of its Trimble Pivot Platform software, a modular solution for real-time GNSS infrastructure management, ranging from a single-base GNSS Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) to a full Real-Time Network (RTN), serving thousands of end-users worldwide. Version 3.10 provides improvements to network performance and office and field productivity. The new features and capabilities include: Galileo support: provides access to five GNSS constellations—GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, QZSS and now Galileo—allowing end-users to expect improved positioning accuracy and fix performance due to the 50% increase of accessible satellites; GPS L5 support: utilizes all available L5 third-frequency GPS observations to... Murphy Surveys Partners with PelicanCorp for Underground Infrastructure Safety

Murphy Surveys has signed a partnership agreement with PelicanCorp, a world leading provider of utilities solutions, to offer a new and improved ‘beforeUdig’ service that will help protect buried infrastructure through radically streamlining the process of requesting and receiving location plans from asset owners in Ireland. The partnership, announced at the Utility Week Ireland Power Conference in Dublin, aims to expand the coverage of the existing service making it easier for asset owners to be aware of digging activity near their assets, and for contractors to locate and identify buried utilities prior to digging. With the information provided through beforeUdig,... (read more)

Bluesky Aerial Survey Helps Malta Develop Geospatial Infrastructure

Aerial mapping company Bluesky has captured aerial photography and 3D map coverage of Malta. Working alongside tender lead IIC Technologies and Ordnance Survey, Bluesky captured ultra-high resolution aerial photography together with high density LiDAR measurements. Part of project SIntegraM - Spatial Data Integration for the Maltese Islands, the data will be used across various government departments and entities as part of the ERDF.02.030; a Maltese Government project led by the Planning Authority through ERDF Funding. “The timely capture of such detailed aerial photography and height measurements by Bluesky is a first for Malta,” said Ashley Hili, SIntegraM Project Leader from... Esri Story Map Shows US Infrastructure Needs Serious Work

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has released its 2017 Infrastructure Report Card, giving the United States a D+ grade. Mapping company Esri has created a Story Map to help put the infrastructure issues into context. The Esri Story Map “A Network Derailed” presents a comprehensive overview and analysis of all major transportation infrastructure systems and networks, including highways, bridges, railroads, ports, waterways and airports. Using interactive maps, users can pan and zoom to areas of interest. The latest authoritative data is incorporated, including the ASCE report card and the 2016 National Bridge Inventory released in earlier this year. The story also cites the latest... (read more)

GeoPlace Supports Government Framework for Upgrading Digital Infrastructure

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has published its ‘Framework for UK Fibre Delivery’ as an important step in supporting the upgrade of the UK’s digital infrastructure to ensure data can flow reliably at volume and speed. The deployment of fibre networks means an increase in street works taking place on the roads. Recognising that street works cause disruption and congestion, the DCMS Framework is a toolkit offering advice for local authorities, operators and contractors to maximise the success of fibre deployment in a consistent and transparent manner across the country. The toolkit aims to help improve... (read more)
